Avoiding Summer Migraines

People who suffer with migraines, may notice a variety of increased triggers in the summer months. Here are some helpful tips to avoid migraines and headaches in the summer.

1. Don’t let yourself get dehydrated, even a little.

Dehydration is a major headache and migraine trigger for many people.  Water or electrolyte containing drinks are always good choices, avoid caffeine and alcohol!

2. Don’t get caught without your sunglasses.

Avoid spending too much time in the summer sun and overheating.  Invest in some good sunglasses and a wide brim hat.

3. Beware of fragrance in summer products.

Are you sensitive to fragrances and/or other odors? Look for fragrance-free products such as sunscreen and insect repellent.

4. Try not to stray too far from your routine.

Plan ahead to avoid stress and be careful not to skip meals, or indulge in trigger foods. Take time to relax and try to keep your sleep schedule regular, too. Both too much and too little sleep can be a trigger for some people.

5. Take care of your medications.

Keep your meds in a cool, dark place and when traveling, keep your meds with you on the plane or in the car.  Avoid script stress, by marking prescription refill times on your calendar so you don’t run out of meds.
