27 Aug 5 low sugar cocktails
The hot weather is a perfect time for a refreshing cocktail but if you’re trying to cut down on sugar then not all of them will be suitable. If you’re having a party or a BBQ at home you can modify traditional cocktails and cut back on the sweetness. Try these five delicious recipes to make low calorie summer cocktails at home.
Lynchburg Diet Lemonade
This delicious citrus cocktail was named after the home of the Jack Daniel’s distillery in Tennessee.
50ml of Jack Daniel’s whisky
25ml lemon juice
25ml limejuice over cubed ice
Top with diet lemonade.
Mojito
A low-sugar version of this Cuban classic.
Mix 50ml of rum with six lime wedges and a small handful of fresh mint leaves.
Add 25ml of gomme sugar syrup (half the usual recipe)
Fill with crushed ice
Top with soda.
Margarita on the rocks
There are three kinds of this popular cocktail and the ‘shaken’ kind is the one we like best. It packs much less sugar than its frozen sister.
Combine 35ml tequila
15ml triple sec
15ml lime or lemon juice
Serve over cubed ice.
Pimms and Diet lemonade
The low-sugar version of the British classic.
One part Pimms
Three parts diet lemonade.
Finish by stirring in oranges, strawberries, mint, cucumber and ice.
Skinny Strawberry Daiquiri
This fruity classic shares its name with a Cuban beach.
Blend 50ml of rum
25ml of lime- juice
50ml of sugar-free strawberry syrup
Handful of crushed ice
Blend until smooth
Serve in a chilled martini glass and top with strawberries.
Other low sugar cocktails include:
– Vodka with cranberry juice
– Moscow Mule (Vodka with diet ginger beer & twist of lime)
– Rum and diet Coke. Use spiced rum for that extra kick.
Tip: Avoid fruit juices and always go for the ‘diet’ mixers and sugar-free syrups.
